Mount:
The mount which was used on this is the M39 mount, also known as LTM (Leica Thread-Mount), which is a 39mm diameter Leica screw mount.
The lens mount has the same M39 thread as the existing Canon lens, but it also added lugs that can be locked by a special bayonet mount. Only two products use those lugs, the new "Dream Lens" and the "Mirror Box 2". When it came to lens selection, the Canon lenses of the day were considered by many to be superior to Leitz lenses. This camera would accept any Leitz lens you have.
Light Meter:
This is Canon's first rangefinder with a built-in light meter.
The lens did not communicate with the camera by that, so the aperture was
set manually. The light meter is connected internally with the shutter speed dial and the ASA selection dial, so that the light meter reading in F stops.
The pointer on the light meter indicates the aperture value under the current shutter. (in short,)
There is a small disk on the right side of the viewfinder under the light meter. There is a small disk with a black dot and an orange dot on the other side. The value on the metering dial is divided into two colors (orange and white) switching between the two metering modes by rotating the small disk( in simple terms, when rotating to the black dot on the disk, the white value is used to measure, when it's rotated to the orange dot, it corresponds to the orange value.) For example, when you taking photos in a brighter scene, the metering sensitivity is relatively low. At this time, would better to use the white dial for metering. (rotate the small disc to the black dot to switch)
The funniest and the best thing is that this camera doesn't need a battery for the light meter.
Viewfinder and Shutter Curtain:
Unlike the past, Canon7 uses a special flexible metal shutter curtain. When a lens with a large aperture is used, the traditional cloth shutter curtains in the past were often inadvertently burned through by the sunlight focused by the lens, so that all the film would have an exposure spot when taking pictures later and have to be repaired.
Canon7 has a 0.8x magnification, perfectly sealed viewfinder. Even now after nearly 60 years, there is still no dust and impurities in the viewfinder, and the visual field is extremely bright and clear. Meanwhile, the 0.8x magnification viewfinder makes it possible to open both eyes to focus while shooting. And lens frames were projected onto the field of view. Lens lengths of 35mm, 50mm,  85-100mm and 135mm could be selected by a dial on the top deck.
Range Finder Window:
The front of the camera shows the Selenium cell of the light meter on the upper left corner with the range finder window embedded in it. The lens mount shows its distinctive bayonet lugs. The range finder window was moved to the right lengthening the base of the range-finding triangle. This increased rangefinder accuracy, but more importantly, it moved the window to a location that it would not interfere with the new f 0.95 “Dream Lens” introduced with this camera.
Film Compartment:
Users who often use Leica may habitually lift the film rewind lever to open the film compartment, but for the film compartment of Canon7, the bottom plate does not come off. It is unlocked by rotating the safety lock lever at the left bottom of the camera and then the latch on the right merely unlocks the back allowing it to swing open. Completely eliminate the possibility of accidentally opening the back cover. Film loading was easier than in the Leica cameras as the back opened all the way, hinging on the right side and lifting on the left, allowing the film to be threaded across the sprockets and onto the take-up rule.
Shutter Section:
The Canon7 shutter section includes the shutter release button, shutter lock, and safety lock set ring, film advance indicator, and film counter, shutter speed dial and ASA selection dial, film advance lever，self-timer. The film is wound with a standard single-stroke lever. Turn the collar around the trigger button to "A" to use the shutter. Next to it is a red dot. If the collar is set there, the trigger will be locked and the shutter cannot be fired. Finally, there is an "R" position, which still keeps the shutter locked, but unlocks the winding sprocket, allowing the film to be rewound at the end of the roll.
Reviews and Defects
The layout of the top deck is clean and easy to figure out. The back is plain and flat without a holder for film data. The round switch to the right of the viewfinder selects the high or low setting for the light meter. The back swings open for easy loading. The shutter curtains are metallic. The top of the camera is uncluttered. Shutter speeds run from T, B, 1 to 1/1000th of a second. The light meter is calibrated directly in f/ stops.
This was the last rangefinder camera to be available in all-black paint. It came usually with a 50mm f/1.8, f/1.4, f/1.2, or f/0.95 lens. Some were branded as Bell and Howell for marketing in the United States.
Generally speaking, This Canon 7 is easy to use, has great lenses, is very quiet, loads easily. For a rangefinder camera, it is the most important index.
Defects and Remarks:
A few screws are rusted, and there are slight scratches and negligible stains from normal use on the whole body and a sunken on the silver case where near the flash socket, which does not affect the use and overall appearance. This item does not contain a lens, but the body can work normally and does not require any electric power drive, it is purely a mechanical system drive. There is some dust in the outer gaps of the film rail, but the inside of the film compartment is very clean and spotless. All functions can be used normally with a vintage camera strap attached, and the body is attached with a flashlight socket and a tripod socket. The frame of the viewfinder is made of metal. I strongly do not recommend to do focusing when wearing glasses, because the frame is very likely to scratch your glasses' lenses.
