This is a beautiful figurine of a Borzoi dog, also known as a Russian Wolfhound. Borzoi are a type of large Russian sighthound that resemble Afghan hounds in body structure and size. They originated in 17th-century Russia and were a cross of Arabian greyhounds with a thick-coated breed so they could withstand the cold northern winters. They are used most often as hunting dogs, primarily wolf hunting, due to their agility and speed. They can be found in a variety of colors. Adult males weigh over 100 pounds and measure 30 inches tall at the shoulder.
This figurine was made in Hungary by the Hollohaza Porcelain Manufactory. This manufacturing firm was founded in 1777 as a glass factory, and 1831 it transitioned into making ceramics. The mark on the bottom of this piece
(see photo)
was used from 1979 to 1985. The piece measures about 12" tall and the base measures about 7" by 4". It is in very good condition with no visible nicks, chips, scratches, or cracks. There are 2 small dark spots on the base that appear to be firing marks
(see last photo).
