Otto Poertzel was a German artist, known for his naturalistic Art Deco sculptures of dancers, bathers, and film stars. Rendered in bronze, stone, and porcelain, Poertzel gave his works a sense of movement and elegance. Born on October 24, 1876 in Scheibe, Germany, Poertzel secured an apprenticeship at a local porcelain factory, before studying porcelain techniques at the Technical Academy in Sonnenberg. At the turn of the 19th century, Poertzel began working as a freelance sculptor, proving to be a profitable profession, he received many commissions from the government, including his 1907 bust Alexandrinenbrunnens at the Coburg Fountains, as well as relief busts of Adolf Hitler during the Nazi era. Poertzel participated in numerous international exhibitions, including the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis and at the Brussels International Art Exhibition in 1910. Poertzel died on January 16, 1963 in Coburg, Germany.
